PlayStation 5 Launch

It’s been a crazy few weeks for me. Moved to Japan during a crazy pandemic, had to be restricted and not able to leave my residence for 16 days, and finally got all my household items after being without them for three months. Here we are though, the cusp of a new console generation.

I went through a ridiculous process to get my Bestbuy preorder when sites started to just jump the gun and start releasing pre orders early. I was hoping for an Amazon one, but I’m a little glad I didn’t. So I was able to get a pre order and was going to ship it to my brother since I didn’t have an actual mailing address until just a week or two ago. I then found out that Bestbuy wouldn’t even let me change my mailing address since their website sucks so bad.

In spite of all that, I went to my local store on the launch day, which was a day in the future for me because of my location, and saw a huge preorder pickup line a couple hours before the store opened. I went home disappointed and started unpacking more of the house, resigned to wait for my mail to get to me, whenever that was.

Fifteen minutes before the store opened I decided to just go check it out since it’s only about a five minute walk away. As I rounded the corner and saw the line, it seemed a lot smaller than the one in the morning. Then I noticed that it was snaking around this time. I crept up to the back of the line and ended up just standing in the back of the line, about 100 people in front of me leading into the store. Within a few minutes of waiting a lady from the store came out and started handing out slips, she had counted the inventory and wanted to ensure that people in line could get a system and to help organize everything. She’d walk through the line and grab a small stack of slips out of her pocket, then dip back in and grab a few more, it was very misleading and a bit cheeky.

To my surprise, she made it to me and pulled out a fresh slip from her pocket and bestowed me with the ability to buy a console. Granted, I had already paid for my first console months ago when Bestbuy snatched the money from me. The preorder still said it hadn’t even shipped yet, just processing. My anxiety turned to excitement and then more anxiety. What if they only had the digital editions by the time I got in the store and could buy one? I definitely did not want one of those, although I was trying to convince myself that I could use an extra console in the bedroom. So I scanned the box of everyone coming out of the store, they all had the slots on the image, perhaps that was all the inventory they received. I was starting to feel better and better.

Once i was in the store, they’d only allow three people in at a time to keep social distancing, I was able to hand over my little piece of paper and pick up my PS5 from a stack of about 40 that they had left. I quickly got in line, there was no need to buy any accessories or games, and paid for my system. To my surprise they rang it up at 479.99 with no tax. It wasn’t that bad. I’m probably going to go all digital with this console since my internet it so good here, and I don’t have a data cap or anything like that to worry about.

It’s been a long road to get to this point.

I quickly walked home and unboxed the console and hooked it up to my 65” LG OLED in the living room. I have it standing up and kind of tucked behind my tv which I actually like a lot. I went through the setup process, decided not to transfer any saves or setting from my PS4 Pro, you can do it later so it’s all good, and just used the PlayStation app to scan the QR Code and sign in that way. Then I jumped to the store, saw that there were only a small handful of PS5 games available and that I could only preorder the games I wanted. I still had until the afternoon for them to be unlocked and played. I got the Spider-Man Miles Morales with the remaster of the first game and Demon’s Souls. They downloaded really fast, perhaps Sony has fixed their download speed issue that they’re known for. I was able to download both games in under an hour.

Tucked slightly behind my TV. I’ll probably move it further behind and I do some more cable management.

I then went and downloaded a few other games like Bugsnax and some PS4 games to test out. The interesting thing I found was that my PS4 games downloaded a lot slower than the PS5 titles. Not sure what was happening with that or if they upgraded their CDN for this generation.

So I then jumped right into Astros Playroom and got my hands on the new controller, it was an impressive showcase of what the controller can do, not necessarily of the console hardware. That can be left to other games like Demons Souls I suppose. I then bounced into Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls just to get a small taste.

All in all, a surprisingly good launch day for PS5 for me. I feel lucky to get one for myself and another for my brother. It’s really shitty that people are already trying to scalp systems on eBay. This has sort of revitalized my enthusiasm for playing games on my console, now I’m just looking forward to getting into the games and the system and truly seeing what this next generation of consoles are all about.

Playstation 5 Showcase Event

Here’s a quick rundown of the show.

Final Fantasy 16 – Captured on PC emulating the PS5 experience. Holy shit, didn’t see that one coming. I thought the game was an MMO by the looks of it. Says it’s a console exclusive that is also coming to PC. I wasn’t really impressed by the brief video, but now that I know it’s a mainline title I might be a little more intrigued.

Spider Man: Miles Morales – The reflections are not ray traced, but they do look like a high quality SSR version. The first look at gameplay looks good. Hard to tell just how nice the city will look and the improvements by using PS5 hardware. Dark scene away from the city. Looked like a really nice PS4 game. Holiday release again.

Hogwarts Legacy – Never would have thought they’d announce a Harry Potter game at a Sony conference. Takes place in the late 1800s. Very interesting since I love the IP so much and that it doesn’t focus on the age of Harry himself. The graphics look nice, and they have a Deep Down dragon scene almost. Released next year.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War – Campaign mission is shown. I mean, yea, CoD. Coming this holiday. Hope they announce the release date.

Village Resident Evil (or just RE 8)– Feels like a mix between 4 and 7. Coming in 2021. I’d guess around Jan or Feb.

Deathloop – Delayed game is shown again. I really wonder if I’m going to like this game. It feels more fast paced and rogue-like, which isn’t why I play and love their games. It does feel like a funky 70’s version of Prey 2, which is cool.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition – It looked they had ray traced reflections. I might actually give this game a shot on next-gen. Hopefully they come in at a discounted price since it’s a rerelease. The game does look just a little dated in graphics. Available at launch. Nice.

Oddworld: Soulstorm – This is a game series that I’ve tried and am just not interested in. I really don’t like the art style at all. I can’t get onboard with Abe, sorry. Lorne Lanning does like getting out there and talking about his IP.

  • They are not going to be announcing a price and release date. That’s how I’m feeling right now.

Five Nights at Freedy’s: Security Breach – …don’t even know what to say about this.

Demon Souls Remake – The game looks gorgeous. I really can’t wait to play this, might be my most anticipated game right now, besides Cyberpunk 2077. Just showed the incredibly fast loading speed, game changing. The lighting on the boss is really great. The bloom off the smoke towards the top of the frame. I also can’t wait to see RKG go through this game. Release date…not given? okay…suspect.

Fortnit -Of course you have to show this. Available at launch.

Playstation Plus collection – New benefit for PS5. They’re just showing a bunch of really good games. That are… available for PS5 users at launch. Called the PS4 Collection. Nice. This was a surprising feature.

Showing the console. Let’s get into it Sony!

November 12 – Release date

499 disk

399 digital

One more quick look he says…

Sounds like God of War!!

Ragnarok is coming next year. 2021!

Recap – So yes, they did announce a date and price. Which is fucking great, finally. When can I preorder now? The biggest announcements were the Harry Potter game, God of War Ragnarok coming out next year, and FF16 being a console exclusive. They hit a good price, especially for the cheaper console. The pricing on headphones and all that other stuff will probably just come out in a press release. Can’t wait for the next brief that shows how the console works and the menus and all that.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Right off the bat my first impression of this game was that Peter Parker looks like a shitty character. I didn’t like the design of him at all. That kind of grows on you, meaning that you stop trying to think about how dumb he looks and just focus on the man in the spidey costume.

Let me also state that I beat this gamel (with platinum trophy) a few months ago, took a break from video games and then just recently finished up the DLC and got all the extra trophies above for the DLC and beating the game on New Game +.

…a spider, perched atop a light, looks for a restroom.

There’s not much more to say about a game that’s sold this well. Just about everyone who wanted to play Spider-Man has. It’s a very solid game. Just saying that is a little surprising to me. Not because it’s a superhero game, or a Spider-Man game, but because of the developers. Listening to podcasts (mainly Marty Sliva from IGN(long time ago)) always going about how great Sunset Overdrive was made it one of the first games I played on my XBox One, and that game was not that fun. It was just the same shit over and over, really boring and forgettable in my opinion, way overrated. So I was a bit skeptical when that team was given a Marvel IP to work with. The game is great however, so no worries.

Damn fine character detail work on display here.

The story was good, I enjoyed the Dr. Octavius plotline and how it all ramped up, kind of wish they didn’t go the established route with him and instead tried to subvert our expectations. We all knew where the story was going. I enjoyed Miles, his relationship, and most of the plot beats in the game. Mr. Negative was a bit forgettable but that’s okay too.

The game engine is pretty great, minus the part I clipped through a building and ended up inside the geometry unable to get out. It didn’t bother me, just made me laugh and have to reload the game.

Yes, I’m inside a building… you got a problem with that?

The amount of costumes you unlock was a really smart idea. It kept the game feeling fresh and made me want to jump into photo mode a lot more often than I normally would.

The combat felt really fun for a beat-em-up type game. Towards the end I just dropped the difficulty level down because some of the fights would go on for a long time. I kind of just got tired of repeating the same types of fights over and over.

A really striking shot.

That leads into the side quests and how monotonous they get. This will only matter to you if you’re a completionist or trying to get the platinum trophy. You have to just do the same thing over and over, it’s a bit of a drag honestly. The best thing is that they don’t make you do it as often as some other games…so that’s a thing. What does suck is that the DLC actually adds more of these mission, a new set for each episode of DLC, of which there are 3. Damn developers, you couldn’t have thought of other fun stuff for us to do? I guess it’s better to save those ideas up for the sequel.

The DLC was enjoyable and I actually enjoyed the story arc of Yuri Watanabe, the cop you’ve been working with throughout the entire game. It was an unexpected twist for sure. I also liked how Black Cat played on their relationship to manipulate Peter.

Pause For a Second

Oooooh, she naughty!

Wrapping It Up

Can we just openly talk about Black Cat. How the fuck did Marvel get away with this shit? That’s just a straight ripoff of Cat Woman from DC’s Batman. She’s a thief…a woman that runs around the city in a black cat outfit stealing shit… Stan Lee just straight up jacked that shit.

More like Copy Cat! Am I Right?

Just to put a bow on it. The game is a big ball of fun. Great story, the locomotion of swinging around a city is done with skill, and really nice graphics that pull you into the world. I can’t wait for the inevitable sequel on PS5.

Ol’ man Stan

Score – 9.0

I’d give it a straight 9. It’s a beautiful, well made game with a good story. Just wish the combat and side quests didn’t get so repetitive.

A section of the New York playground offered.
